Welcome to ITALZ-L

discussion list about Alzheimer’s disease

What is a Discussion List?

An electronic discussion list is a sort of virtual “club”, a thematic discussion group, in which the discussion takes place in a written form by reading and sending in e-mail messages. The participants, after registration, may participate in the discussions, both passively (by simply reading the messages found on the list) and actively (writing and sending in messages). Anyone who is registered may participate in the discussion (send messages) and receive those messages which are regularly sent to people on the list. In order to take part in the activities, it is necessary for one to have an electronic mailbox (an e-mail address).

    The lists may be

  • moderated or non moderated (as is the case for ITALZ-L): in the moderated lists there is a person, the “moderator”, who receives the messages sent by the registrants and decides which of those may be sent to all components of the list (acting as a filtre)
  • closed or open (like ITALZ-L): in closed lists not everyone can participate and it is considered (generally by the moderator) whether one is eligible for registration or not.

What is ITALZ-L?

ITALZ-L is an italian electronic discussion list on Alzheimer’s disease. This list is open to anyone concerned with Alzheimer’s disease. Anyone may register: health and social workers, relatives of ill people, volunteers, researchers, students, doctors, nursing personnel.

This list may be used to:
  • announce conferences, gatherings, meetings
  • ask for help, ask questions
  • inform on initiatives, active groups within Italy
  • share doubts and suggestions
  • reflect on experiences
  • discuss on advances in research
  • ... and discuss on any other issue of a common interest to the list
  • This list is non moderated and its seriousness and dependability are based on the wisdom and the good judgment of the registrants in sending in only appropriate material.

No commercial advertisement should be sent out on this list. The dividing line between “shopping advice” and “public utility information” is a rather fine one; once again we rely upon the ethical sense of the registrants and on the respect for those afflicted by this disease.

Anyone abusing of this instrument or not conforming to the above-mentioned principles shall be excluded from the list!

ITALZ-L’s Objectives

ITALZ-L’s main objective is to create a discussion forum on Alzheimer’s disease. ITALZ-L aims at becoming a meeting point and wants to act as a liaison between families and people afflicted by the disease, so that they may discuss and find common solutions to their problems, make use of common experiences, help each other to deal with the consequences of the disease. We hope that a large discussion base and the creation of a community constantly in touch may contribute to the improvement of health and social services and to the adaptation of current laws in such a way as to guarantee the rights of the ill and of his/her family.

ITALZ-L wants to act as a mean for spreading and deepening our knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and for putting volunteer associations in touch with one another.

ITALZ-L wants to act as a supporting unit to promote people’s awareness of the social impact, stimulate the aggregation of the various associations and the growth of service centres. ITALZ-L wants to act as “virtual” location from which one may rapidly and easily reach all active groups.

Another one of ITALZ-L’s objectives is to give exposure to, and to interconnect, all the local Italian groups supporting and assisting the afflicted and their families in their fight against the disease.

We hope that this list may contribute to the development in Italy of a service and discussion forum analogous to the ones which have been developed in the English speaking countries, where there are numerous lists (such as the wubios lists , for example, of the School of Medicine of Washington) and various information technology support services .

ITALZ-L welcomes all those interested in taking part in discussions on the above issues.

This list cannot provide medical diagnoses or suggest medical treatment. An accurate diagnosis may come only as the result of a direct medical examination.

How to Take Part in the Discussion on the List

To take part in the discussion on the list, once registered, all you have to do is to send an e-mail message to
      italz-l@italz.it
In so doing, you “send an e-mail to the list” where the list server copies the message and sends it out to all registrants. This address is also known as the list’s address.

All requests from the server MUST NOT BE sent to this address (otherwise they get redistributed to all registrants), but rather to:

listserv@fi.cnr.it (which is known as "the address of the list server".)
It is important to avoid sending a reply specific to a question read on the list, to all registrants when this is actually of interest only to the person formulating the question.. Indeed, for any discussions of interest to only two registrants, private addresses should be used but rather than the list (consider also that a large number of the discussions may be of interest to larger groups).

A list of all registrants together with their e-mail addresses may be obtained by sending the following request to the address of the list server (listserv@fi.cnr.it), that is a message containing only the following:

      recipients or
      review
The opposite mistake is also often made, that is sending a message only to the person formulating the question and being convinced of taking part in the discussion and having sent the message out to the whole list. Make sure, then, to check addresses carefully before sending out any message!

Messages sent to the list server are retrieved by an automatic program and are not read by human beings; to obtain more information on this list, and to ask questions to a “human being”, please send an e-mail to the manager of the list at the following address :
