World Wide Web
A powerful hypertext browsing tool allowing the user to obtain further information about or direct online connections to any selected word or phrase in a document. The beginning "page" (it may be more than one screen long) in any hypertext document level, from which all further links begin, is called the home page. These documents are created using "html" or HyperText Markup Language. Many hypertext documents also have graphic images. To be able to see these you need to use a graphic user interface like Mosaic or NetScape with a Windows program on your computer.
The Web also provides a means of direct online access to other Internet resources that are available by other searching tools such as gophers, telnet, etc. Anything available on the Internet can be accessed by WWW using a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) that tells the kind of resource it is and the address of that resource. Hypertext document URLs begin with "http" which means HyperText Transport Protocol. URLs can also begin with "gopher," "file," etc.
You connect to WWW through a local client program known as a browser. Many Web sites are very busy and you may get an "unable to connect" message. The compiler has connected with each URL listed below, so if you get such a message try again early or late in the day.

Freenets
These are community-based citizen-oriented networks in cities that provide free access to local information and resources as well as selected network topics of wider interest. Many of the larger ones provide e-mail, connections to gophers, and menu access to other freenets. You can gain access to any one of them in a number of ways. If you live in a city that has a freenet use direct dial-up access through your modem to the local telephone number. If you do not live in a city with a freenet, you could gain access either through the Telnet function of Internet, as an item on a Gopher menu, directly through your Internet service provider, or through another freenet.

Discussion groups - Listservs
All discussion groups/listservs are subscribed to the same way using the e-mail function. You send your subscription request to the listserv address. After you are subscribed you send messages and replies to the list address. There is a difference between these two addresses and if you follow the directions below you should have no trouble. When you send a message or reply to the list, copies are automatically sent to all subscribers to the list.
You can send a message to a discussion group without being a member. Use the list addresses as given below.

Usenet
Usenet is a collection of thousands of newsgroups culled from both e-mail discussion groups and listservs. Each newsgroup is arranged hierarchically within large categories using multipart names separated with periods. You can either just read or read and reply to messages in each newsgroup.

Gophers
Gophers are browsing tools that pull together scattered Internet resources in a single menu format. You can connect to a gopher site through the Telnet function of Internet, by using a gopher client program through your Internet service provider, or through any other resource on the Internet that chooses to make gopher access available.
