Alzheimer's Disease Web The focus is on the biochemistry and pathology of Alzheimer's and there are linkages to other neurobiology laboratory research sites, as well as news items, articles by researchers, and conference reports from similar researchers. It is based at the University of Melbourne in Australia.
Manitoba Senior Citizens Handbook This handbook has been published since 1980 and is now available on the Internet. The home page has lots of links to a large amount of practical information for senior citizens.
Seniors Computer Information Project (SCIP) This Manitoba program is funded by the Seniors Independence Program of Health Canada and has 2 aspects: (a) to teach older adults computer applications at 6 senior centres throughout Manitoba, and (b) to provide an Internet site on WWW for seniors. It is housed at MBnet at the University of Manitoba. This WWW provides information under such topics as advocacy, health, income and finances, law and consumer issues, lifestyles, travel and leisure, other selected Internet sites, etc.
Seniors Guide to Federal Programs and Services This is the title of a guide published by the Canadian Minister of Public Health and Welfare. This 4th edition (1994) has been posted to the Internet. There is lots of practical information on 26 different topics such as consumer services, counseling services, income security, protection, technology for seniors.
Hanover County (Virginia) Freenet There is a home page for "Services to Senior Citizens." Textual descriptions, not in hypertext with links, of local services are provided.
Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) The home page to this government agency that administers Medicare provides links to a directory of staff telephone numbers, and information about press releases, Medicare publications, HCFA regulations and manuals, etc. It also provides an online link to other government health care WWW servers.
Honolulu Community College SeniorNet Has information about the older adult education program at this college plus the San Francisco SeniorNet program described above on pages 1 and 2 of this list. There are no links to other resources from this page.
Maine Bureau of Elder and Adult Services This is the first State Unit on Aging with a home page on the Internet. It has many links to such information as aging services in Maine, upcoming events, statistics, RFP/RFI information, the AOA Eldercare Locator, living wills/durable power of attorney, direct online links to 15 other WWW sites on aging, and a section for direct online comments.
Miami University of Ohio A sub-menu in the University's library gopher under the larger headings of "subject" and then "sociology," the "Aging Resources" page provides 12 links to other gophers. Most of these links are to general sources such as the Social Security Administration, Clinton's health care plan, information for non-profit organizations, etc.
Salem (Oregon) Senior Citizen Resources One of several home pages on this Salem Web site. It has links to local information on such topics as senior centers, volunteer activities, home health agencies, housing, utilities, transportation, etc.
Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology Has information about selected gerontology programs in the U.S., federal resources on aging, links to other Internet resources, and much other useful information. Aging Research Centre (ARC) This is a very limited resource site. There are sections on themes of aging, upcoming meetings and conferences, newsgroups, books, papers, laboratories, and other Web sites but there is very little information in any of them. After connecting, go to the aging section and then to the agesit59 subsection.
Bo Graham's Home Page for Alzheimer's Everything on this home page is an online link to another resource. It is a somewhat haphazard list and many of the links that were tried for this review did not connect.
Galaxy EINet's Galaxy is a World Wide Web link to over 100,000 hypertext link titles. The information is organized by topic and under the medicine and then the medical specialities subsections there is a sub-subsection on geriatrics. This has miscellaneous information on physical and occupational therapists in the midwest states as well as book titles. There is also a direct search capability. This compiler, however, found that almost every link tried was either inaccessible or contained very little substantive information.
Social Security Administration Online (SSA OnLine) A very good resource with links to benefit information, information in Spanish, the full text of the SSA handbook, an online document search service, a very long list of answers to frequently asked questions, and online links to other government servers such as the Health Care Financing Administration, the Census Bureau, the House and Senate gophers, and Thomas, the Library of Congress link to legislative information.
